FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a SMART Goal?
There really is no such thing as a “SMART Goal”. The 5 steps of writing a SMART Goal are just that – writing 5 steps – Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Reasonable and Timely. These are the parameters for making goals, but they are not “goals”.
Where do SMART goals come from?
SMART goals come from business - a concept not founded in education and this is why they aren’t doing what we think they are supposed to be doing in schools. Someone told us, “This is a great idea, let’s use it!”, but failed to adapt goal setting for students to use. I will teach you how to fix this.
How does goal setting work?
It moves your internal goal posts! Goal setting changes the direction you move in by refocusing how you think.
What is the School Goals Work program?
A day of training where teachers will learn how to create baselines, set goals, manage time, and prioritize tasks. In doing so, they will learn to create a sense of urgency in the students that makes them want to come to class not because they have to, but because they want to! It shifts accountability of achievement from teacher to student.
What grades is School Goals Work intended for?
School Goals Work is for ALL grades and all ages from elementary to college. Goal Setting, Prioritization and Time Management are cornerstones of education that should be started as soon as children begin school.
How is the School Goals Work program different from all other PD’s?
The training does not involve computers, laptops, iPads, apps or cell phones. Bring a notebook and pencil. In fact, cell phones are not permitted. It does not involve changing your curriculum or syllabus. It does not involve gimmicks, only time-tested methods and strategies to increase both student and teacher performance.
Should teachers be having students still make SMART goals at the start of the year?
The simple answer is absolutely not! You cannot “fake” Goal Setting. You cannot “assign” students to create a SMART goal and expect anything to come of it other than a grade or a post-it on the wall. Let me show you what to do to start the year out on the right foot!
Why aren’t your SMART goals working?
They don’t work because while a great idea, SMART goals are business ideas. Schools have not yet adapted SMART goals to the classroom, and without those adaptations they cannot do what they were designed to do. Let me show you how!
If our SMART goals are correctly adapted to the classroom, will they work?
100% of the time! Guaranteed!
Why are Educational Management Consultants failing?
A Management Consultant is not fluent in the intricacies of how successful classrooms are run, and Educators are not fluent in how Goal Setting, Prioritization and Time Management are used to achieve maximum student - and teacher! - successes.
To do this you need someone who has successfully applied Goal Setting, Prioritization and Time Management in both fields. Only someone who has experience successfully using goal setting in the private sector and then adapting the same approach to the public sector – school. I have that experience.
Why have I developed this program?
Because schools need help! Goals work in businesses and can absolutely work in schools.
But you need to adapt the business model for the classroom model. I ran a truly “data- driven” classroom for more than 20 years and have seen miracles happen that many teachers will never get to experience – but can and should! Let me show you how!
